Computer Science

The Computer Science program at Houghton College has just been revised (2002) to reflect the latest recommendations of the Computer Society of Institute for Electronic and Electrical Engineers and Association for Computing Machinery.

The Computer Science Major is constructed in such a way that it provides the flexibility to meet the varying interest of students, whether they want to pursue a science direction such as graduate study or research or whether they lean more towards a management information system environment.

The Computer Science lab, which is only available to CS Majors or Minors, has been modernized. Presently, the lab contains several Pentium II and III systems and a Sun Workstation. The CS program also has additional hardware used to set up networking in various configurations. The major operating systems available include Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and UNIX (Solaris and Linux). Java is the major language used by the program. In addition, other languages taught include C++, C, Visual Basic, Lisp, and Perl.
