Integrative Studies Department

What are integrative studies? They are the core of the Houghton curriculum. All students at Houghton College take at least 36 hours of integrative studies courses, commonly known as general education. Integrative studies courses provide the common core of knowledge, skills, and values that mark a Houghton liberal arts education--western civilization, Bible, philosophy, theology, natural and social science, fine arts, mathematics, physical education, culture and language, writing, literature, and communication.

The Houghton faculty established a separate department of integrative studies to express our commitment to liberal arts in ways that would meet the following goals:

1. To give integrative studies (general education) standing that is equal with other parts of the students' academic curricula.

2. To bring cohesion, sequence, and identity to the integrative studies curriculum, making it a distinctive of Houghton College.

3. To provide avenues of oversight, assessment, and innovation for the integrative studies curriculum and its faculty.

4. To foster interdisciplinary cooperation within the integrative studies curriculum.

5. To accomplish this by focusing on physical, emotional, social, cognitive, moral, and faith development as well as on integration of multiple disciplines, of values and faith with learning, and of theory and history with praxis.
