Overview. In the workshop, I will show you how to produce a web page from scratch, how to organize web pages into a website, and how to make links within the webpage and to other pages and sites. Then I will show you how to insert graphic materials and build tables, how to test your website, and how to publish it.
Web site design for academic topics
Starting a web page.
Terms:Web pages and web sites. Hyperlinks (Hot links) and URLs. Graphic materials and tables. Publishing.
I. Setting down the basics of a web page with the Netscape Gold Editor.
1. In Netscape, click on File/New Document/Blank (The next time you want to work on the same web page, click File/Open File in Editor… and then select your file from wherever you have it saved.)
2. Type in some text about your planned web site: The title of your topic, the category or categories that relate to it, and a few sentences explaining something about it. Format is not important yet. Just enter some text you can work with. As soon as you have finished, you have a web page. However, it is not yet in a form you would be proud to publish, and if you submit it as is, you will get an F. So let's consider some ways to improve and expand it.
3. Cut and paste buttons
(Useful trick: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V. This is a reliable method to cut and paste even URLs from dialog boxes.)
4. Font characteristics
Size: Use the A- and A+ buttons in the top toolbar.
Bold: Use the A button.
Italic: Use the A button.
Color: Use the Rubik's cube button.
5. Bullets and numbering buttons.
6. Indent, center, and justify: The line buttons.
7. Save: The diskette button.
II. Making it more user-friendly: Links
A. Within a page: Target, then link
1. First, move the cursor to the place in your page that you want the link to reach, and click the bull's-eye target button.
2. Give the target a short name, and click OK.
3. Save the document before proceeding to the next step.
4. Highlight the text word or phrase (or graphic element) you want to become a hyperlink.
5. Click the chain LINK button.
6. Select and highlight the target from the list in the dialog box, and click OK.
B. To another page: Link to the URL. You can include a target.
1. Save the document before proceeding to the next step.
2. Highlight the text word or phrase (or graphic element) you want to become a hyperlink.
3. Click the chain LINK button.
4. Type in the URL (internet address) for the target page, and click OK.
C. Some link ideas for an academic website:
- from a term to its definition
- from an index to the corresponding target or site
- to a deeper discussion of a sub-topic
- to a related idea
- from a citation to its bibliographic entry in the reference list
- to an example or illustration
- to a related website or website target
- to a relevant graphic illustration

A. First, save your web page.
B. You must have a graphics file already saved in GIF or JPEG/JPG format. You can download material from the web, you can save images from a scanner, a digital camera, or a videotape, or you can have your photographs processed into digital format. A good website for graphics is http://little.fishnet.net/~gini/cool/
C. In Netscape Gold's Editor:To insert a graphic from a saved file, move your cursor to the place in the web page where you want to insert. Then click Insert/Image… which will open a Properties dialog box. Type in the name of the graphics file, or find it with the Browse button.
D. Select the location for the graphic relative to the text around it. (The result will not be WYSIWYG in the editor), and choose a size (start with the Original Size button). Then click OK.
