Students studying philosophy for the first time often assume it is something strange and new. But philosophy is just thinking as well as we can about perennial human questions--something you do every time you get into a late-night discussion about ethics, politics, human nature, or education.
Philosophers are characterized by their appetite for ideas. They own their beliefs, and stretch beyond mirroring the views of mentors or authors.
Honing one's ability to analyze, assess, and argue provides an excellent foundation for careers in law, medicine, management, education, and more. Philosophy majors outperform most other majors, not only on the GRE, but also on the LSAT and GMAT; and they are accepted into medical school at a higher rate than students in any other major. But most important, philosophically-minded Christians are particularly well equipped to discharge the admonition "to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." (I Peter 3:15)
