MEN'S SOCCER GAME SUMMARIES 2000

10/31
Houghton 5, Elmira College 0

The Highlanders sent their seniors out on a winning note, closing the season with a 5-0 win over Elmira. Tim Mayhle, Mike Cox, Matt Herman, and Ole Petter Andresen were playing in their last game.

Mike Wheelhouse opened the scoring in the 8th minute, taking a corner from David Bancroft, sending his first shot of a defender, and putting his rebound straight in at the far post. Bancroft did his own damage 20 minutes later, taking a beautiful cross from Andresen and deflecting a shot off a defender and into the goal.

Eddie Acker pushed the lead to 3-0 with seven seconds left in the first half. After an attempted Elmira clearance only made it to the top of the box, Acker deposited the loose ball into the back of the net.

Tim Haffey headed in a 30-yard Bancroft cross in the 70th minute, and Cameron Boyd closed the scoring just one minute later.

10/14
Houghton 17, Daemen College 0

When Trevor Eby scored to put Houghton up 1-0 just three minutes into the game, neither he, his teammates, nor the Houghton fans could have predicted the record-setting day that was ahead.

Eby added six more goals and three assists on the afternoon as the Highlanders (6-4-2) rolled to a 17-0 win. The seven goals broke the school record of six set by Steve Burke against Daemen in 1979, and the 17 individual points is also a school record. The 17 team goals broke the mark of 14 set against Medaille College in 1978.

The Highlanders scored six first-half goals, with Eby and Paulo Goque each netting two, Brad Clodfelter tallying one, and the sixth coming off a Daemen own goal.

Eby tallied his hattrick just two minutes into the second half and added his fourth just three minutes later. After a Mamoru Miyazaki goal put the Highlanders up 9-0 in the 54th minute, Eby scored again and inched closer to the record. Miyazaki tallied again and Mike Wheelhouse scored for a 12-0 lead, and then Eby scored his sixth in the 68th minute. Cameron Boyd, Mike Cox, and David Bancroft scored the next three goals, before Eby closed out the scoring with his seventh with just two minutes left in the contest.

Bancroft also had a career day, netting a goal and handing out five assists. Eddie Acker tallied three assists, and Miyazaki had two for the Highlanders.

Houghton outshot Daemen, 42-3.

Houghton 6, Nyack College 1

After being shutout the last two games, the Highlanders (5-3-1) finally got their offense back in high gear. Freshman Trevor Eby led the way with three goals and two assists, while junior David Bancroft added a goal and two assists.

Houghton took control from the start, pressuring Nyack in their own end before breaking through with a goal in the 30th minute. Bancroft sent a perfect corner kick to the near post to Eby, who flicked a header under the crossbar. Seven minutes later, Eby took advantage of a slip by the Nyack defender at the top of the box, picked up a pass from Iain Velez, and after moving past the sliding keeper, chipped a shot into the open goal from 10 yards out.

Nyack pulled to within one in the 50th minute after some miscommunication by Houghton’s defense in the box. A perfect cross found an unmarked Jason Rollins six yards from the net. He one-touched a pass to Scott Ruch, who calmly sent a shot past Houghton keeper Tim Mayhle.

The Highlanders answered 15 minutes later after a nice combination. Freshman Tim Haffey took the ball to the right end line, chipped a pass to the far post to Eby, who headed it to Bancroft six yards in front of the net. Bancroft half-volleyed a shot straight in.

Sophomore Mamoru Miyazaki chipped an 18-yard shot over the keeper’s hands and under the crossbar in the 74th minute, and Brad Clodfelter put in a close-range shot just one minute later. Eby closed out the scoring with one minute left in the game to register his first career hattrick.

Tim Mayhle made four saves in net. Houghton held a 36-to-7 advantage in shots, including a 19-5 edge in shots on goal.

HOUGHTON — Freshman Richard Switzer scored twice to lead the Highlanders to a 3-1 season-opening win over Gannon University (NCAA-II).

Switzer tallied his first career goal at the nine minute mark after a bad clearance attempt by the Gannon keeper. Switzer knocked the ball down at the 18 and put it straight in from 12 yards out.

The Highlanders went ahead 2-0 three minutes into the second half when freshman Trevor Eby gained possession just outside the box and passed to Switzer on the left, who put the ball inside the left post.

Gannon pulled to within one with a goal just 12 minutes later, but Iain Velez took advantage of another bad clearance by the keeper, stealing the ball and slipping a 20 yard shot just inside the right post to put the game away in the final minute.

Tim Mayhle made five saves in goal to pick up the win.
