Reading/Literacy Education The Houghton College Education Department invites applications and nominations for a full-time tenure-track position in Reading/Literacy Education.  The individual filling the position will join a strong, collegial department as it launches a new masters degree program in literacy. 

Houghton College is a residential Christian liberal arts college located in rural western New York State.  Teachers prepared at Houghton are highly motivated and successful in teaching and in graduate study.  The Department seeks a colleague who is committed to excellence in teaching, engaged in research, and eager to mentor highly motivated young teachers entering the profession.

 Responsibilities: The chief responsibilities are teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy, supervising students in field placements, and student advising.  Faculty members are also expected to participate in scholarship and in service to the Department, College and community.  The individual filling the position will have the opportunity to participate in the development of the masters program in literacy.

 Qualifications:  Doctorate in literacy or related field with expertise in literacy education must be completed by June 2008.  Experience in P-12 teaching desired.  Candidates with expertise in critical literacy, multiple literacies, and literary theory are particularly encouraged to apply.

Earth Science / Physics: The Houghton College Department of Physics and Earth Science invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, faculty appointment beginning the fall semester of 2008.  The position requires a Ph.D. in an earth science-related field (examples might include climatology or geophysics) with a strong background in physics.  Academic rank will be determined based on previous teaching experience.  Responsibilities include teaching earth systems science classes, as well as introductory geology, astronomy and physics.  Courses in computational science are also possible for candidates with the appropriate background.  The successful candidate must possess outstanding creative, interpersonal and leadership skills, provide evidence of teaching excellence, and have a strong commitment to evangelical Christian faith.  Preference will be given to applicants that can actively involve undergraduates in research.

Special Education: The Houghton College Education Department invites applications and nominations for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Special Education.  Responsibilities will include individual and collaborative course instruction in effective inclusive practices and strategies at the undergraduate and graduate (pending program approval) levels, student advising, supervision of field placements, development of partnerships with local school districts, and ongoing program development.  Qualifications include a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Special Education (ABD considered) and experience in the field.  Candidates with strong preparation in content area instruction are particularly encouraged to apply.

P.A.C.E. Adult Degree Completion Program has openings for adjunct professors qualified to teach Business Writing at centers in West Seneca, Olean, Arcade, Jamestown, Dansville and other locations. The program is conducted year-round, with each course meeting seven times. The course focuses on improving written communication skills through mastery of basic mechanical skills, clear reasoning and organization, identifying audience, and effective administrative writing style. M.A. in Rhetoric and Composition or relevant writing field required. Ph.D. and/or pertinent business experience desirable.
