"Vertical" progress is one step per year.  "Horizontal" progress is by completion of education and/or promotion as described in the Faculty Handbook.

    3. Average number of departmental minor graduates for last 3 years x .01 x 2 semesters
    4. Total number of hours taught in the department in previous 2 semesters/1000 x .2

Chair load is compensated as follows:
    1. If load credit is less than 3 hours & teaching load is 24 or more, cash for entire credit.
    2. If load credit is more than 3 hours & teaching load is 21 or more, cash for the excess above 3.
         (In other words, course reduction is expected. Overload must be negotiated.)

                * Hours here are 50 minute "hours"

                        + Art faculty teach 7 courses/year (4 @3 units+3 @3 units) for a total of 21 credit load.  However this means 28 hours of contact time with students (16+12) (Studio courses are taught with 2 sessions of 2 hours each WITH faculty and 1 session of 2 hours in studio WITHOUT faculty always present; as indicated in chart above.)  Sometimes/Often the 7th course is a lecture class NOT a studio class so in this case the contact time during the semester with 4 courses would be 15 (3 @4hrs + 1 @3hrs) not 16.

                ** Multiple sections are combined and team taught with plenary lectures and smaller discussion groups: Teamed faculty both receive 1 hr course load credit for shared plenary lectures and each receives 1 hr credit for each discussion section.  The total load credit assigned remains the same as if the multiple sections of approximately 40 students each were each handled by a single faculty member receiving 3 hrs load credit per section.
