Testing and Computer Assisted Guidance
In addition to individual counseling, a variety of testing instruments are available to student to aid in the process of finding out who they are, what they have to offer, and what they can do. In addition, many of these testing instruments relate certain interests, skills, and personal preferences to potential career opportunities. A computer assisted career guidance program offers information about specific career opportunities, including the nature of the work, work tasks, skills and training needed, job outlook, and salary information.
The following resources, available in the Career Services Office, will assist you in learning about yourself and the world of work.
TypeFocus
TypeFocus is a computer-based guidance system that enables students to assess their interests, competencies, values, and experience needs, and to explore and analyze occupational and educational paths compatible with these attributes. Students can learn more about the occupations, duties, educational requirements, skill demands, experience benefits, work values, job earnings, and job outlook.
Click here to go directly to TypeFocus. Use the site password hc344 and follow the instructions to register. You may return to the program as often as you wish.
This program is based on the Myers-Briggs
Type Index (MBTI).
Strong Interest Inventory
The Strong Interest Inventory
(SII) is the oldest and most reliable of the vocational instruments.
The SII is an empirically designed instrument that reports the actual
interest patterns of people employed in given occupations. Your answers are
then compared to these patterns so that you can begin to identify potential
career fields related to these patterns. This is a send-away test, and you
will be provided a comprehensive summary in return. If you wish to take the
Strong Inventory, stop in Career Services.
Myers Briggs Type Indicator
The Myers Briggs Type Indicator
(MBTI) is a type of personality inventory. The self-report
questionnaire helps you to identify your preferences for how you
focus your attention and energy, how you acquire or gather information, make
decisions, arrive at conclusions, or make judgments, and how you relate to
the outer world. Knowing and understanding these preferences can help you to
make career and occupational choices consistent with what is most
interesting and satisfying to you. Ask about the Myers-Briggs at Career
Services.
STUDENT ACADEMIC SERVICES
Student Academic Services provides assistance to students experiencing academic difficulties. Among the services provided are peer tutoring, student advisement, and screening for learning-related disabilities. While students may be screened for learning disabilities through SAS, complete diagnosis may require additional off-campus testing. The SAS Office works with students to create a manageable plan for success, including testing for learning disabilities if indicated. If you feel you may need tutorial help or testing, you can contact the Student Academic Services Office at Ext. 2620.
