Piano Camp
June 29-July 5, 2008

Piano Camp at Houghton CollegeHoughton College Piano Camp, now in its 13th year, invites young pianists in junior and senior high school to join together with their peers for a concentrated week of making music, making new friends, and having lots of fun along the way.

Campers are paired by age and ability, and assigned piano duets at the beginning of the week.  The focus is on developing ways of learning new music quickly and securely, giving attention to musical interpretation, and preparation for a public presentation.  Each day’s schedule includes periods for learning/practice as well as lessons on the duets with experienced artist-teachers, abetted by class sessions in music listening, theory, and composition/arranging.  Prior to the public recital on Saturday morning campers have opportunity to hear each other via a dress rehearsal Friday evening.

Houghton College Piano CampAs an option, campers may elect to take private lessons with camp faculty on a space-available basis for an additional fee.  Private lessons include two 45-minute sessions; for those whose music is sufficiently well prepared, a solo recital is presented at week’s end, again preceded by a dress rehearsal in the recital hall.  For campers taking private lessons who wish to play on the solo recital, music should be already learned and almost performance-ready before coming to camp.
Afternoons and evenings feature a mix of recreational and musical activities.  Recreation includes swimming at the college pool, hiking, light sports, horseback riding, and informal games.  Usually there are one or two off-campus excursions, such as to Letchworth State Park.

Piano Camp has been highly popular with campers, many of whom return year after year.  Most importantly, the collegiality of camp provides an opportunity for young pianists to hear others of their own age, and thus serve as an encouragement to individual musical development during the school year.
