INCL 311 Intercultural Experience
PROPOSAL GUIDELINES
This course is required for completion of the Intercultural Studies major.
(All students receiving credit for the course must complete INCL 211 and must
submit a proposal and complete all other requirements. Those in the Houghton
in Tanzania program DO NOT need to complete a formal proposal, but will be submit
goals as part of the program.) The proposal must be submitted to the your On-Campus
Mentor at least four weeks before the end of the semester prior to the experience
or preferably during the taking of INCL 211. (See INCL 311 Requirements Sheet.)
GUIDELINES FOR PROPOSAL
- Deadline - The proposal must be submitted four weeks before the end
of regular classes (not counting Final Exams) the semester prior to the experience.
Due to complex arrangements often required, it is recommended to submit this
proposal during INCL 211. Approval must be secured from the Intercultural
Studies Evaluation Committee before you leave for your experience. Without
prior approval, no credit will be granted for cross-cultural experiences.
- Two copies - Submit two copies of your neatly formatted proposal
to your On-Campus Mentor in the program.
- Contents - The Proposal shall include:
- TYPE OF EXPERIENCE - Name the program or experience and its location.
State whether this is a formal study program, an internship or special
arrangement. Describe the nature of the program briefly, noting the cultural
benefits, service or internship arrangements, home-stay etc. Especially
in the case of special arrangement, specify how requirements will be met.

- OVERVIEW - Provide a short opening essay stating how you envision
this experience will connect with your future career and service interests
or your preparation and training, including concentration or other factors.
Explain briefly why this program or site is particularly fitting. Identify
previous connections, courses, and experiences that have prepared you
for this cross-cultural experience.
- COURSES - Specify the courses and credits you expect to take
if this is a formal program of study, especially noting those that are
unusual or not related to intercultural studies. Even if not a formal
program, specify if LANGUAGE requirement is part of this experience.

ON-SITE SUPERVISOR -
Name the
On-Site Supervisor and how he/she may be contacted. State titles, roles,
credentials and/or relationships of the supervisor. Before you submit this
proposal you are required to make contact with your On-Site Supervisor and
advise them of what we are expecting: 1) regular meetings, 2) debriefing
of your experience and stated goals, and 3) letter of evaluation regarding
your cooperation, adjustment, and cooperation toward achieving the
projected goals.
- GOALS

List
several key personal goals to be achieved during in this experience.
Consider your special interests, your academic concentration, and both
your personal growth and academic and career desires. If language learning
is desired, include this. These preliminary goals should be helpful in
both self and supervisory evaluation. (Note: you are expected to share
these goals with your both your on-site and Houghton supervisor. These
goals should early on appear in the journal may be revised in light of
experience realities with the On-Site Supervisor early in the program.
