REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETING INCL 311

  1. INCL 211 Intercultural Transition and Adjustment - REQUIRED 2 hour credit pre-requisite. (Offered each semester & Mayterm) Non-Houghton students required to do 1000 pages of reading assigned by program director if receiving INCL 311 in a Houghton semester program such as Houghton in Tanzania.


  2. Application Form. For selection of program and On-Campus Mentor. Submitted to INCL program director. (Dr. Gallman)


  3. Interview with 311 On-Campus Mentor


  4. (Items 4-5,7 not required if using a Houghton off campus program)
  5. Proposal. Submitted to your On-Campus Mentor normally during the semester of INCL 211, and no later than four weeks before the end of semester prior to program. Specifically outlines your goals for the intercultural experience. (See INCL 311 Proposal Guidelines)


  6. Approval of Proposal. By Intercultural Studies Evaluation Committee (No later than three weeks prior to the end of classes the semester prior to the experience.)


  7. Assignments. Written during and at close of the experience and submitted to the On-Campus Mentor no later than one month after the experience:

  8. Note: For Houghton programs (e.g.Tanzania) director will include assignments into the program. Equivalent assignments completed for other Study Abroad programs (e.g. CCCU programs) may be submitted if cleared with On-Campus Mentor.

  9. Letter of Evaluation. From On-Site Supervisor. Mainly evaluate the adjustment of the student to the culture and level of effort and cooperation toward achieving the projected goals. (Sent directly to On-Campus Mentor via email or mail.)

  10. Final Grade and Evaluation. From On-Campus Mentor. No grade will be assigned until all work for the course has been completed. The Mentor may call for a face to face debriefing prior to assigning a grade. All students will debrief in INCL 482 Senior Intercultural Seminar.

Notes: A maximum total of 17 credit hours (including the 4 hour Intercultural Experience) may be recorded on your transcript for any one semester's work or during an equivalent time period. Unless one has special permission a student may then earn no more than 13 credits other than the INCL 311 experience during the semester he/she signs up for INCL 311. Tuition will be charged at the rate indicated in the college catalog. Special Mayterm and summer rates may apply.
