Sportsmanship Policy
Game officials will evaluate the performance of each team
concerning their sportsmanship after each contest. The point values, ratings and
criteria for each category are as follows:
Points RATING
CRITERIA
5
Excellent
This rating will be given to a team
which demonstrates extremely good sportsmanship toward both the other team and
the officials. This rating should only be given when there is an attitude of
complete cooperation by all team members throughout the entire game. Respect and
encouragement for the officials and opponents must also be shown.
4
Good
This rating should be given when only
minor infractions of sportsmanship occur, but the game progresses without undue
problems. There should be no, ejections, yellow cards, or technical fouls given
or blatant displays of bad attitudes shown. The captain must be in control of
his/her team throughout the game.
3
Fair
This rating should be given when a team
still shows cooperation with officials and opponents, however some complaints
and grumblings take place. There should still be no blatant displays of bad
attitude and the captain should be in control of his/her team. A maximum of one
technical foul, one red card or ejection, and/or one or two yellow cards can be
given.
2
Poor
This rating should be given when a team
fails to show a spirit of cooperation with the officials or opponents. They may
continuously complain and/or argue to officials about calls and interpretations,
they may demonstrate a bad attitude on the part of one or more players on more
than one occasion, or they may play unnecessarily rough, causing potential
safety hazards. The captain is not in strong control of his/her team's players
and the team may receive three or four yellow cards, one or two technical fouls
or one or two ejections (red cards in some sports).
1
Very Poor
This rating should be given when a team
demonstrates blatant disregard for the spirit of competition. Play may be
dangerous with occasional intent to injure opponents. The captain has no or very
little control of his/her team's conduct. The team may receive multiple yellow
cards (5 or more) or multiple ejections.
Results of Ratings
1. Game officials will evaluate the performance of each team concerning their
sportsmanship after each contest. In order for teams to be eligible for playoff
competition, they must have a cumulative average rating for sportsmanship
throughout the regular season of at least a 3.0 and may not have more
than one rating under 2.0. In order to continue in playoff competition, teams
must earn a "Fair" (3) rating or higher in each game. Teams which earn
lower than a "Fair" (3) rating will be eliminated from playoff
competition.
2. Abusive language will not be tolerated. Players who use foul language
such as swearing or abusive name calling will be ejected from the contest
without warning. Players who continually harass or question game officials will
also be ejected from the contest.
3. An individual ejected from a contest for displaying poor
sportsmanship, including abusive language, will automatically be suspended for
their team's next game as well. If an individual is ejected from a second game
in the same sport, that individual is suspended from all Intramural
participation for the remainder of that semester. Depending upon the seriousness
of the offenses, the suspension may carry over into the next semester as well.
4. Whenever participants are physically abusive, the following penalties
will be assessed:
a.
If a participant is involved in a "minor scuffle" (a pushing match of
sorts), whether they are the primary aggressor or they retaliate, they will be
ejected from the contest in which the scuffle took place. They will also be
declared ineligible to play for their teams next two games.
b.
If a participant is involved in a "fight" where punches are thrown,
whether they are the primary aggressor or they retaliate, they will be
immediately declared ineligible for all intramural competition for at least 10
weeks
*
If an official is going to give out a 2 or lower he will have the supervisor on
duty come over and watch the game to support and verify his decision.
