One frequently asked question is, “What do I call the Profs?” While you may be tempted to call your professors many things during your four years at Houghton, normally “Professor” followed by the person's name will do just fine.  Certainly one may use 'Mr.'”,  'Ms.' (or 'Mrs.') in any situation without fear of being inappropriate or incorrect.  A professor holding the doctorate may be addressed by that title if one chooses.  Normally one does not call a professor by his or her first name unless specifically invited to do so.

To whom do you go if you have a problem, academic or otherwise?

Your faculty advisor should be a first contact, especially for academic issues. The Greatbatch School of Music administrative assistant (CFA 105, x4000) has much procedural information. If you are not comfortable talking to your advisor, make an appointment with the director or contact you MSAC class representative. Often, your first option might be to ask the advice of an older student whom you trust for wisdom and discretion. For significant personal issues, you may wish to consult with Houghton’s excellent Counseling Center. Their services are provided to you without any added fee.
