2007-2008 PARKING POLICY Brought to you by Houghton College Safety and Security Ray Parlett, Director Vehicle Registration and Permits All students must register their car, truck or motorcycle with Houghton College Safety and Security if they wish to park on college property. Parking permits are issued according to a student’s eligibility based on class and residence.
** A parking permit is not a guarantee of an available parking space. It gives the registrant permission to park in their designated lot(s). If no space is available in the desired lot, the driver must find a space in another permitted lot. Stickers must be completely adhered to the window glass to be considered valid.
Parking Policy Vehicle use regulations are in effect 24 hours a day - 7 days a week. These include but, are not limited to: · Speeding or reckless driving · Driving on sidewalks, foot paths or grass · Parking in Fire Lanes · Parking in restricted parking spaces or other “no parking” areas · Blocking dumpsters or loading docks Reserved parking lot restrictions are in effect 8 am - 5 pm, Monday through Friday, on days when classes are in session, including test days, and during May term. This begins the first day of each semester. During these times, if a vehicle is found in a parking area not covered by its permit, it may receive a parking violation ticket. This includes Bank parking. F After 5 PM weekdays and on weekends, students may park in any campus lot with the exceptions of Rothenbuhler Hall and behind Lambein Hall. Tickets and Fines þ Tickets will be issued on offending vehicles at the discretion of the Safety and Security Officer. The registrant of the vehicle is then responsible for the resulting fines.
þ Ticket fines may be paid by cash, check, or charged to your college account at the Safety and Security office in the Campus Center during regular business hours.
þ Ticket fines paid within seven (7) calendar days of the ticket issue date are automatically reduced by 50%. Moving violations are not automatically reduced.
þ If a ticket is not paid or appealed within seven (7) days of the ticket issue date, the amount may be billed in full to the student’s account.
Tickets may be appealed, at any time before they are billed to the student’s account by filing a If an appeal is filed within seven (7) days of the ticket issue date, the 50% fine reduction (see above) will still apply. Appeal reply’s will be sent via email within seven (7) days of filing the appeal. The email will give the adjusted fine (if any) and the date payment is due. If payment is not received by the due date, the adjusted fine plus a billing fee will be charged to the student’s account.
Suspension of parking privileges and towing
Students who receive five or more tickets per year may, at the discretion of the Director of Safety and Security, lose their privilege to park on college property. Anyone with suspended parking privileges found parking on college property may have their vehicle towed away at their expense.
Any unregistered vehicle found regularly parking on Houghton College property will receive an Immobilization Warning. If, after this warning, no parking permit is obtained by the vehicle’s owner/operator an immobilization device (boot) will be placed on the vehicle rendering it inoperable. This device will remain attached until the owner/operator agrees to register the vehicle, remove it from campus, or the vehicle is towed from campus at the owner’s expense. Any registered vehicle with multiple tickets, or other serious vehicle use violations, may be immobilized until the matter is resolved with the Director of Safety and Security. An immobilization removal fee may be charged. Taking responsibility for the ticket is the cheapest and quickest way to resolve the ticket.
It is the student’s responsibility to be familiar with the parking policies that are in effect, and to follow them.
