Information on Clubs
ACO (Allegany County Outreach)
ACO is a big brothers/big sisters organization sponsored by Houghton College. Members are matched with a child from the community, ages 5-12, with whom they will get to know and mentor throughout the year. ACO organizes monthly parties for all the little and big brothers/sisters. These parties will be held about one Saturday each month form 1-3 pm, and will usually have different themes. During these parties there is games, crafts and snacks so that the big and little brothers and sisters will be able to have fun while getting to know each other better. It is also encouraged that the college students spend time with their little at your own time. Littles love to come to the college to watch a basketball game or have a meal. Members are asked to contact their little brother or sister once a week to deeper their relationship and encourage and challenge each other.Back to Club Listing »
Equestrian Society
In addition to being able to ride the college's twenty-sex horses during any club time, the society brings in world renown clinicians to supplement the already spectacular training Houghton Equestrian students receive. There are regular meetings to plan activities, shows, clinics, and even barn improvement days. All of these activities are geared toward not only bettering the students' knowledge and helping with the upkeep of the barn but are also great tools for bringing the Society together as a community biased on friendship and respect. No matter what a person's talents and gifts, there is a place fore everyone in the Equestrian Society. From dedicated riders who are Equestrian Studies majors, to those students who simply love horses, there is a place for all in this diverse club. The Equestrian Society cabinet consists of President Lindsay Yandon, Secretary Bethany Hyde, Treasurer Helena Tyler, and Chaplain Steve Birdsall.

Imitators of Christ
Imitators of Christ is a student-run organization seeking to offer students the opportunity to grow and learn from influential men and women of God. Students fill out applications, send them in, and we prayerfully match them with a spiritual mentor and role model. The time commitment depends entirely on the student and their mentor, but we recommend that pairs meet at least once every other week. For students looking for a mentor and faculty/staff/community members looking to be a mentor, e-mail Amanda Wilgus to obtain a profile/application. For questions about finances, publicity, or administrative duties, e-mail Kait(lan) Ferris.

Paddle Sports
We learn white water techniques for kayaks and rafts. We teach water/ river/ boat safety. We play games, like tag, and go deck-dancing. Also we take trips around the area (and sometimes longer break trips) to use our skills on the open water. During winter months we go raft sledding at Letchworth. And have random gatherings to hang out and have meals together. Costs involve gas money for trips and food (when applicable). Otherwise, it's a great free time to hang out and meet new people!!Back to Club Listing »

Swim Club
We swim! We do all kinds of workouts. They can be modified for swimmers and most any level of expertise. We rotate between stroke development, sprinting, and endurance workouts. We have one stroke we focus each month during a monthly stroke improvement day (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, or Freestyle). We keep track of our times personally and try to reach a group distance goal each semester. Right now, we are trying to "swim to Canada" by totaling up the distance we swim each practice and tracking it across Lake Ontario. We have special days about once a month. We have diving days, game days, and synchronized swimming days. We also organize intramural swim meets and participate as a club in intramural water polo.Back to Club Listing »
