Senate approves funding request for Soup Run (April 3, 2008)
Students involved with the Soup Run brought a CEF Type II request for $300 to the senate. After discussion on whether or not CEF monies could be used for such an event, the senate moved to approve the request.
Katarina Kieffer confirmed as Star Editor-in-Chief for 08-09 AY (April 3, 2008)
The Selection Committee is the body that performs the initial interviews and application process for the three student editors (Star, Boulder, and Lanthorn), as well as the CAB Director. The Committee then makes a recommendation to the senate, to be confirmed or denied. On March 13 the Committee recommended Katarina Kieffer for the position of Star Editor-in-Chief, and the senate confirmed this appointment.
Michael Danylak elected Speaker of the 65th SGA Senate (April 3, 2008)
Michael Danylak, a college senator and senior-in-waiting, was elected to serve as Speaker of the Senate for the 65th senate. Speaker Danylak is currently studying abroad in Washington D.C., so he will not assume office until August 2008.
Jenny Jerman and Emily Rinhart elected as Homecoming Co-chairs (April 3, 2008)
The senate elected Jenny Jerman, who will be a senior during the 08-09 AY, and Emily Rinhart, a sophomore during the 08-09 AY, to be Homecoming Co-chairs. They will work with various other students and administrators for the Fall 2008 Homecoming.
Jenny Jerman and Isaac Trowbridge elected to College Advisory Board (April 3, 2008)
The faculty moved to give Vice President for Student Life Sharra Hynes authority over Houghton dances for the rest of the semester, until a formal policy is passed. VP Hynes has instituted the Student Life Office's plan of a College Advisory Board, which will serve as the Body to review requests for dances. The Board will have three student members, two of whom were be elected by the senate, Jenny Jerman and Isaac Trowbrige, and the other being appointed by the chair of the Board.
Senate passes Dance Policy Resolution (March 13, 2008)
After being briefed on the proposed Dance Policy designed by the Student
Life Office, the senate had concerns over the manner in which members of the
College Advisory Board were selected: two faculty members, one staff member,
and one student are to be selected by the chair of the Board, while the other
members would be a student selected by the senate, and a staff member selected
by the Staff Cabinet. The senate drafted a resolution suggesting the policy be
changed so that the two faculty, two staff members, and two students be selected
by their respective constituencies.

Matthew Hepler appointed to Selection Committee (March 13, 2008)
The Selection Committee is the body that performs the initial interviews and application process for the three student editors (Star, Boulder, and Lanthorn), as well as the CAB Director. There one position on the committee open to a student at large, and after hearing from the interested students, the senate elected Matthew Hepler to the Committee.
Student elected to Judiciary Committee (March 6, 2008)
After hearing from three interested students, the senate voted to approve Jason Fisher as the fourth student representative to the Judiciary Committee. The position opened due to a previous student resigning from the committee.
Senate passes resolution on student rights, judicial policy (March 6, 2008)
A resolution concerning student rights, as outlined in the
Student Guide, was brought before the senate.
The document called for certain rights, taken out in 2004, to be
put back in the Guide. The resolution was unanimously approved.

Senate addresses conference funding for students (March 6, 2008)
During the February 14 meeting of the senate, the issue of providing
money for Houghton students to travel to and attend conferences came
up. The senate moved to draft a letter to the Academic Dean's
office, since students often learn about these conferences from faculty.
The draft was proposed during the March 6 meeting, and the senate moved
to approve it.

Senate suggests change in SLO Dancing Policy draft (March 6, 2008)
After hearing a report from the Student Life Council concerning the new dance policy they are working on, the senate moved to propose a change. As the draft currently reads, there are two faculty, staff, and students on the proposed committee that will review peitions for official dances on campus. One faculty, staff, and student are currently elected from among their respective constituencies, and the other is appointed by the Vice President for Student Life, who will chair the committee. The sente moved to draft a letter that expresses the opinion that both members from a particular group should be elected.
