Services & Events
In addition to the other activities of the SGA described in this website, it is involved with the following...
Red Cross Blood Drives
Every few months, the Student Government organizes a Blood Drive in conjunction with the Red Cross. Each Drive is held in the basement of the Reinhold Campus Center, with appointment times available from 10am-4pm. We are very proud to host the Red Cross at Houghton and have always been pleased with the students' willingness to help.
The next Blood Drive is this Tuesday, April 8 from 10am-4pm . You do not need an appointment, but they are encouraged. Sign-ups for Blood Drive times will be held during lunches and dinners, and we will mail out reminders the day before.
The next drive also provides a chance to win prizes for all those who help out and donate blood. All those giving will be entered into a contest to win a gift certificate to Java 101. Those donating Double Reds will be entered twice.
Contact the SGA Vice-President with any questions, or to sign up for an appointment via email.
Donut Days
Upcoming Donut Days:
Wednesday, March 5 (Election Day!) and Tuesday, April 1
In the SGA Office, we make it our business to keep the students happy. Whether it's through our bottomless candy dish, friendly smiles, or providing you with an extra paper clip or stapler, we want you to know that YOU are our first priority. It is for this reason that we provide coffee, tea and hot chocolate the first Tuesday of every month to anyone who might enjoy spending a few minutes in the beautifully-decorated and friendly SGA Office. We also like to see that you're getting your fair share of sugar, so we have also named the first Tuesday of every month as "Donut Day." These are truly exciting times (honestly, for some of you, this is the day you look forward to all month!) and we welcome the opportunity to interact with you on an individual basis. So come on in! The donuts are fresh and the coffee's warm...
Christmas Decorating
An annual tradition of the SGA's is to decorate Wesley Chapel for Christmas as a service to the campus. The large Christmas trees that are lit during the popular "Tree Lighting Chapel" are put together and decorated by us! This year, as an additional service, the SGA helped decorate not only the chapel but the Campus Center and the light posts out-of-doors. To see pictures from this year, visit the Commissioner of Communications' page.
Various Drives
Turkey DriveSince the fall of 2004 the SGA has helped organize a fund-raising drive to purchase Thanksgiving turkeys for families in Allegany County who would otherwise have to go without. Each year the students, faculty, staff, and administration of Houghton College set a goal (usually between $1,000 and $2,000) and when that goal has been met in the past Dr. Brittain, Dean of the Chapel, has dressed up as a turkey, a pilgrim, and a Cleveland Indian during the chapel before break. In the fall of 2007 alone 71 families were able to purchase Thanksgiving turkeys! Any of the extra money that is raised and is not needed for Thanksgiving goes toward the Christmas Toy Drive (see below). |
Toy DriveFor the past couple of years the SGA has helped in the organization of a Christmas Toy Drive here on campus. Previously the drive was held as a competition between the classes and all of the money raised, along with the remaining Turkey Drive money, went to purchasing gifts for local underprivileged children. This year the drive took the form of an Angel Tree--students could take specific requests off a Christmas tree in the Campus Center and purchase the gifts themselves. |
Operation: Christmas ChildEach year the SGA Chaplain teams up with the Houghton Wesleyan Church to bring Operation: Christmas Child to Houghton College. This program, organized by Samaritan's Purse, sends boxes of goodies to children all over the world. |
