Whether you have been a camper on STEP or are now just looking, you may be wondering what does STEP stand for, and what is it?  STEP, or more accurately, is officially called Project Allegany Student Outreach.  "PASO" which in Spanish is "STEP."  STEP is an adventure put on by Wilderness Adventures of Houghton College every summer.   Students come from all over and spend many days working on our Challenge Ropes Course, climbing wall, and play cool games.  We then go hiking, rock climbing and canoeing in the Adirondacks, it is a great time and we have tons of fun.

STEP-10 Day Adventure

Have you ever been rock climbing or rappelling?  Have you ever jumped off a 30-foot pole to ring a bell or zipped down a 300-foot cable?  Have you ever backpacked in the Adirondack State Park and carried everything you needed for 5 days?  Have you ever lived outside for 10 days in a row or cooked dinner over a fire?  We’re not looking for the next contestants on the “Survivor” show but we are looking for students entering 9-12 grade who are interested in an adventure.

During your experience you will have an opportunity to meet new friends, challenge yourself physically, learn problem solving techniques, practice conflict resolution skills, use teamwork to overcome obstacles and set personal goals. You will spend a few days at the Houghton ropes course working through the low and high elements. We then drive to the Adirondacks to go climbing in the beautiful Keene Valley area.  Expert guides provide assurance of safety as you face the challenge of getting yourself to the top of the rock-face going straight up!   Finish up the trip backpacking and canoeing through the Adirondack State Park!

You may ask, how much does an experience like this cost?  Thanks to a grant from the Allegany County Youth Bureau and funds from the United Way, all you have to pay is a $15.00 registration fee.  Equipment, transportation, food and expertise are provided in addition to a free t-shirt.         Non-Allegany County students pay $400.

First STEP- 4 Day Adventure
