Intercultural Student FAQ's:
(Frequently Asked Questions)

Admission & Financial Aid

How do I apply to Houghton?
All students with US citizenship should follow the regular application instructions found on Houghton's application page. International students need to follow the instructions on the international student application page.

Are there special application instructions for Canadian students?
Canadian students should follow the same application instructions as US citizens. The only difference is that Canadian citizens are not required to submit SAT-I or ACT scores. To find more information see the Canadian Admission Page.

Do I need to speak English to come to Houghton?
Yes. Students from non-English speaking countries must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), administered by the Educational Testing Service, or the SAT-I.  Students with a paper-based TOEFL score of 550 or higher, computer-based score of 213 or higher, or an Internet-based score of 80 or higher may be offered admission, providing all other factors are acceptable.  Houghton's TOEFL code is 2299. An acceptable Verbal score on the SAT-I will also fulfill the college's English proficiency requirement.

What do I do about health insurance?
All Houghton College students are required to have health insurance. If your parents have a health insurance plan which will cover you during your schooling that will qualify. However, you should first confirm that their plan covers you while you are living in the United States (not all plans do). It is up to you to provide proof of health insurance to Houghton College. If you do not provide proof of health insurance that will cover you in the United States, or if you do not have health insurance, then you will be automatically placed on the Houghton College student health plan and billed for your first year.

What financial aid options are available to me?

  1. TCK's who are US citizens are eligible for US federal financial aid. International students (except those with dual citizenship and green card holders) are NOT eligible for federal aid, however international students may become eligible for federal loans IF they have a US citizen as a co-signer.
  2. TCK's who are citizens of New York State are eligible for state aid. In addition, Canadian citizens may be eligible for Provincial aid. Most US states (with a couple exceptions) do not offer reciprocal state aid for New York.
  3. There are countless sources of outside funding through grants, loans, and scholarships. All students are strongly encouraged to pursue these options in addition to seeking federal aid and Houghton aid.
  4. Houghton College financial aid - see below for more information
