Student Web Publishing
Welcome to the Houghton College policy regarding Student Web Page Publishing. This is required reading for every student who wishes to publish Web pages on Houghton College's Web server. This document has been written and officially approved by the Director of Technology Services and the Houghton College Computer Committee. As such, it will be strictly enforced.

The topics covered include:

General Information
Space for Web page publishing will be provided to any Houghton College student at the discretion of the director of Technology Services and the Houghton College Computer Committee.  By publishing Web pages on the Houghton College Web server, the student agrees to abide by this policy whether he or she has read it or not.  The student releases Houghton College, its operators, and any institutions with which they are affiliated from any and all claims and damages of any nature arising from student Web pages.  The following guidelines apply to all student pages hosted on Houghton College’s Web server.
  •    The World Wide Web address, or URL, of all student pages will contain the words “houghton.edu.”  Hence, the content of all student Web pages could have a significant effect on the reputation of the college.  For this reason, students are required to keep their Web page content consistent with the guidelines outlined in the “Standards of Community Life” by which each student has agreed to abide while a student here at Houghton.  Should offensive material or copyright violations be brought to the attention of Technology Services or the webmaster then such material will be removed immediately and a warning will be sent to the student responsible for the page.  Further evidence of offensive material or copyright violation will result in disciplinary action.
  • A Web address or “Uniform Resource Locator” (URL) will be assigned to each student.  This address may be given to your friends and family members so they may have access to your Web pages.  Links will not be allowed from the Houghton College Web site, however.

EVERY student Web page will automatically display the follow disclaimer:

"Views and opinions expressed on this Web page are those of the author
and not Houghton College.

Each student will be allotted 20 megabytes of space on the Web server by request.  Students exceeding this 20 megabyte limit will receive a warning.  Failure to comply with the warning by reducing the Web site amount will result in disciplinary action.
  • Student Web pages will be removed from the Web server six months after the student leaves Houghton College.
Consequence of Violating This Policy
Any student publishing a Web page on the Houghton College Web server that violates this policy is subject to any or all of the following disciplinary actions:
  1. Verbal or written warning to the offender.
  2. Restriction of publishing privileges for a specified period of time.
  3. Removal of the student’s Web pages from Houghton College’s Web server.
  4. Revocation of all system privileges for a specified period.
  5. Statement of charges sent to the dean of students, which could lead to other penalties depending on the seriousness of the offense.
Appeals
Students wishing to contest an administrative decision concerning their publishing of pages on the Houghton College Web server have the following appeal path:
  • Submit an appeal, in writing, to the Director of Computing
  • Submit an appeal, in writing, to the Houghton College Computer Committee.
