Things to Do or Think About:

  • don't neglect voice lesson reports
  • don't delay getting familiar with anatomy
  • schedule voice student or students if you haven't
  • Q: how do you like to be taught?
  • Q: how have your voice teacher(s) influenced how you answered the last question?
  • Now, be thinking of those two questions as you approach your students.

Class Overview and Syllabus

MUS 356 Voice Pedagogy (2, S07, 09) Methods of voice production and development as preparation for teaching; emphasis on teaching and evaluation. Attention to proper selection of music. Two class hours per week; junior and senior year.

This course is combines aspects of a seminar and a workshop. However, given the large enrollment for Spring 2007, there will, of necessity, be more lecture than I would normally desire. This course of study depends much on the input and preparation of the entire group for its success. Central to the course is its hands-on aspect: teaching a student. All that we do is aimed toward helping you acquire the knowledge, tools, and skills to teach voice effectively. This is a seminar in theory and practice. While I have some definite opinions on the subject, I am firmly convinced that the best way to master any such area of endeavor is to do it while thinking about it. And awaaaay we go…
