Lee taught in the Religion Department at IWU from 1970-1980. Maxine earned her master's degree in 1984, producing a book, based on her research project, This Ministry We Share, which dealt both with the lay spouses of ministers and with women who were credentialed ministers. She continued to minister and travel with her husband as he served as General Secretary of Education and the Ministry (1980-88) and then General Superintendent of the Wesleyan Church (1988-2000). Their co-ministry at IWU and in denominational leadership led to their reputation as supporters of women in ministry. They authored articles in The Wesleyan Advocate and lessons in adult Sunday school curriculum. Maxine was invited to conventions and gatherings to share her encouragement and insights with women in ministry. Lee, with the full support of the other General Superintendents, encouraged denominational officers and district superintendents to employ women in the ministry and addressed the concern at the leadership summit at Branson, Missouri in 1998, and again in the Pastoral Letter to the General Conference 2000.
