The circulatory system includes the heart and three
kinds of blood vessels: the arteries, the capillaries, and the veins.
The heart pumps blood through the thick arteries
to all parts of the body. It then goes through thin blood vessels called
capillaries. Then the blood goes through thick vessels called veins on
its way back to the heart. Just before the blood reaches the heart, it
goes through the lungs for more oxygen. The blood makes a path, or circle,
about 4000 times each day going from the heart and returning to the heart.
This is why it is called the circulatory system.
