Course Purpose

To prepare for leadership experiences in leisure programming; to understand leadership styles and theory; to understand principles of the leisure program development cycle; to be able to use fundamental leisure theory to assess needs, plan, design, implement and evaluate leisure programming; to understand organizational theory, program administration and management; to incorporate the concept of service-learning within leisure programming.

 

Desired Learning Outcomes:

  1. to learn the steps in the program development cycle
  2. to learn and be able to apply techniques for use in each of the programming steps
  3. to acquire the ability to design, develop, implement and evaluate leisure programs
  4. to incorporate the concept of service-learning in leisure programming

 

Course Outline:

Part I: The Client (Handouts on shared folder and readings)

This portion of the course will focus on a review of leisure theory and philosophy and how it relates to leisure programming from a client oriented perspective.

    1. Factors affecting leisure programming
    2. Demographics of leisure participation
    3. Issues and Trends

Part II: The Program Administrator (handouts on shared folder, workbook and readings)

This portion of the course will focus on the various skills of the Programmer

    1. Leadership styles - part 1 - 8 deadly sins
    2. Problem solving and decision making -Problem solving workbook # 2
    3. Delegation
    4. Group dynamics
    5. Value clarification
    6. Organizational theory

 

Part III: The Program Planning Process

This portion of the course will focus on the various aspects of the program planning and evaluation process.

    1. Mission and organizational philosophy
    2. Goals and objectives - Over view of the dynamics of the program cycle

3. Needs assessment

4. Program Development and Design

5. Program implementation

6. Program evaluation

 

Course Evaluation:

    1. 3 exams @ 20% each 60%
    2. Service project 20%
    3. Writing assignments 10%
    4. Class participation/involvement 10%
