The Biblical Literature 101 Research ("R") Paper:
Some common questions.
1. Q: Do I need to add a bibliography at
the end?
A: YES. Include in it everything you have
read, together with a note on the pages read in each source.
2. Q. How do I make a bibliography (what
is the format)?
A. You
type it according to the Chicago Manual of Style, better known as
Turabian
(due to the shorter version she popularized). See my condensed
version on the Religion & Philosophy page style
guide. Do not number the bibliography. Alphabetize by author's
last name.
3. Q. Are in-text parentheses OK to use
for references?
4. Q. How long should the report proper be?
A. As stated in the handout, the summary of your
findings should be 1,500 words not counting the bibliography. (to
see a quick word count of any file in MS-Word, click on the menu "file",
then "properties", and select the "statistics" tab when the properties
table pops up).
5. Q. When should I use a footnote?
6. Q. If I don't need the "R" credit, can I skip the
research paper?
A. No. The research paper is still an integral part of
this class. You should, however, skip taking library research if
you have already taken it.
