Ben Witherington, III. The Christology of Jesus. Philadelphia: Fortress, 1990. (read all 277 pp.) Witherington begins with a summary and criticism of earlier works on Jesus. These tend to focus too much on one type of evidence (titles, sayings material, facts about Jesus) to the exclusion of other types of evidence (p. x). Many earlier investigators approached the problem with a great scepticism about the reliability of the church's record of Jesus as found in the gospels. Distortions of Jesus post-Easter meant `a great chasm was fixed between the historical Jesus and the church's later views of Jesus as Christ, Lord,or Son of God.' (p. 2). Witherington points out some methodological weaknesses of form- and tradition critics such as Bultmann and Boring--particularly that their work lacked scientific comparison with oral traditions that are truly analogous. Leaving behind the traditional approach to Christology by "titles" (Son of God, Lord, Christ), Witherington proceeds to analyze three major types of evidence: the Jesus' relationships, Jesus' deeds, and Jesus' words. The first section recounts the interactions between Jesus and John the Baptist, the Pharisees, various revolutionary figures (and how he differed from them), the Roman government and his attitude toward it, and the disciples. Witherington next considers the Christological significance of Jesus' miracles; and finally his teaching in depth. The last section considers Jesus' relationship to the law, his concept of the Kingdom of God and his own role in relation to the Kingdom, Jesus' view of his relationship to God as Father, and the Son of Man sayings. Witherington has done an excellent job
of showing weaknesses in previous studies, and in demonstrating that the
evidence of Jesus' view of himself is multifaceted and widespread within
the gospel traditions. The study of sayings-traditions and of Jesus'
words on the Kingdom are really only a start, in my view, and should go
much farther. But given the wide area the book covers already this is
understandable. Witherington has my support in affirming that the
evidence can be adequately appreciated in its diversity and fulness
"only if Jesus saw himself as God's mashiach, God's royal
Son" (p. 268).
