Syllabus 

REQUIREMENTS:

Readings:  Students are expected to keep up with assigned readings from scripture and the commentaries, and be prepared to discuss the readings in class.  Other readings (e.g. short articles) may be assigned as the instructor thinks appropriate.  Students will not be held accountable for technical information on Greek words, textual variants, and theories of sources behind the literature--unless discussed in class or pointed to as important for understanding a passage. 

Notebook: Students should keep notes on each chapter of John’s gospel and letters, from commentaries and lecture, and any other readings.    Keeping up with these will ensure you are well prepared for exams or quizzes.

Participation & Preparation for Class.  Students must bring a Bible to class; they must be prepared to discuss the day’s passage, the commentary on it, or their own thoughts. Study questions may be given from time to time.  5%

Quizes & Exams:  Quizes (40%) and one final exam. (25%)

Research Paper:  (30%).  DUE FRIDAY APRIL 12.

1      Introduction: requirements.  Who was John? The Prologue (Jn 1:1-18). 

2      Baptism and first disciples (1:19-51); A wedding and a temple (John 2).

3      Dialogue with Nicodemus (3:1-21); controversy and final testimony of the Baptist (3:22-36); dialogue with the Samaritan woman (4:1-42).

4      Second and third signs (4:46—5:15) and controversy dialogue (5:16-47); miraculous feeding (6:1-15); miraculous deliverance at sea (6:16-21); and discourse on bread of life (6:22-71)

5      Bread of life (cont’d); Jesus at feast of Booths (7:1—8:59)

6      Healing a blind man (ch. 9) NO CLASS THURSDAY (Feb break)

7      Good Shepherd discourse and Chanukah controversy (10:1-39); raising of Lazarus and its political consequences (11:1-54)

8      Final Passover: prelude (11:55—12:50); Last meal, footwashing, betrayal revealed (ch. 13);. 

9      “Upper room discourse” (ch. 14-15)

10    “Upper room discourse” cont’d (chs. 16); Jesus’ final prayer (ch. 17).

EASTER BREAK; NO CLASS MAR 25—APRIL 1

11    Jesus’ arrest, trial, execution (chs. 18-19)

12                 Resurrection (chs. 20-21).  Introduction to letters of John, the Johannine community.  RESEARCH PAPER DUE, Fri. April 12

15    1 John 5; 2-3 John.  No class Thursday (=Friday)
