[15 Apr 10] Mel
Van Vickle visited the church at Wijckel, Friesland
on 2 Nov 2009. This is where Gerrit^2 Van Wicklen and Evert^ Van Wickle were
baptized in the mid-1600s. Mel provides some interesting background on the Wijckel
church at this link.
[8 Sep 09] Van Wicklen connection to Carnegies, Rockefellers, McCormicks 7 Sep
09 email from Michael Wolfe -- "I met with the senior computer class
team at Carnegie Mellon University and they are continuing to build the Large Scale
Genealogical Data Base. We are starting with Andrew Carnegie since he created
the university which is building the database. Incidentally, Andrew Carnegie is
connected by marriage to the Van Wicklens which will
be the first thread created. Harry Macy Jr., who was the editor of the NYG&BR is also connected to the Van Wicklens.
He is advising us on the database. [Carnegies >
Rockefellers > McCormicks [reapers] > Sarah
Elizabeth Van Wicklen who married Alfred Decker
McCormick."

Friesland as it looked in 1712 at the bottom of a series of Wijckel and
its RDC church.
(26 Sep 2008)
Harry Macy, Jr. --via 26 Sep 08 email passed along some fascinating new
information about family founder, Jentie Jeppes. It can be found in
the source section of Jentie Jeppes' family page.
In short he found evidence of where the family was living between time of
departure [1660] from the Wijckel, Friesland church
and their departure [1664] from Amsterdam. For at least part of that time they
were in Leeuwarden, the provincial capital, where two of his children, Meinske and Griettie, were baptised in 1662 and 1663 respectively. Macy claims that it
would appear that the Griettie that was baptised in Leeuwarden in 1663 did not survive. The Griettie [or Grietje] that did
survive was apparently the third [and only surviving Griettie]
given that name. Macy further notes that the three attempts made to name a
daughter "Griettie" strongly suggest that
this was the name of one of the grandmothers.
(24 Sep 2008)
Photo of John Budd Slawson, husband of Cephise^7 Van
Wickle, added to Cephise^7
Van Wickle family page. John Budd Slawson was one
of the signers of the Louisiana Secession Ordinance and fled to Paris [via
Cuba] in the waning years of the Civil War. The photo was taken about 1863 in
Paris, France. [photo courtesy of Jaffrey Reichner via 24 Sep 08 email]
(21 Sep 2008)
Located Judith^9 Van Wicklen in the family of Howard and Frances
[Rain] Van Wicklen. Also
located more informaton on Lillie M. Van Wicklen, wife of Oren Van Wicklen.
Judith
died at age 9 [in 1943] of an accidental gun shot wound
from a 38 cal revolver, in the street near her Ohio home. Lillie Van Wicklen received a special Thanksgiving pardon [in Nov of
1923] by Ohio governor Vic Donahey. Two newspaper
articles tell the story on Oren and Lillie Van Wicklen's
family page. In short, Lillie wrote a bad check to cover the funeral expenses
of her father and went to the reformatory at Marysville awaiting a grand jury
indictment. She was released weeks later but not before the juvenile court
awarded her recently acquired foster child to another family. When Lillie
retrieved the baby from the new parents she was arrested and sentenced to the
Marysville Reformatory for one year. Four months into her one-year sentence she
was pardoned by Governor Donahey in his first year as
Ohio's chief executive. [Newspaper article and Ohio death notices provided courtesy of
Michelle Pendleton, via a 20 April 08 email]
(18 May 2008) In a 16
May 2008 email, Marie Roberts of Three Lakes, WI suggests the possibility of a
previously unknown Van Wicklen daughter, Jannetye, b. about 1710-1712. This is largely based on
discovery of a Bucks Co. baptismal record at the Dutch Reformed Church
Bensalem. The baptized child is Jannetye [1712] d/o Jacobus Nagle and Jannetye Van Wicklen. This would give Jannetye
Van Wicklen a birth year of approximately 1690 and
she would seem to fit best as a missing daughter of Gerrit^2 and Tryntje [Gerrits] Van Wicklen [see link -- http://campus.houghton.edu/webs/employees/jvanwicklin/Home%20page/Genealogy/FamPages/gerrit^2.htm
(8 April 2008)

a previously unidentified son of Garret^5 and Rachel
[Frost] Van Wicklin based on 1939 Cramahe
Census that lists Garret Van Wicklin, Jr. 2 males <16, 1 male over 16
[Garret, Jr.] and 1 female over 16 [Garret's wife] He is clearly a son of
Garret^5 as he is the only Garret that fits and a "junior" means that
his father's name has to be Garret.
(18 Aug 2007) Added family information for
children and grandchildren of Milo and Ida^11 [Van
Vickle] Marklowitz [courtesy of Mr.
Vernon Hechtel based on information gathered at a

(16 August 2007)
Special
thanks to Joyce Carr who located archived legal documents of Cornelius Van Wicklin
clearly indicating that he was a son of Paul^4 Van Wicklin and not his grandson
[through Garret^5] as formerly believed. These legal documents also identify
Garret as the eldest son of Paul^4 Paul's daughter Helena^5 Van Wicklin, is
also listed in one affidavit as Eleanor Varty. She
married a Mr. Vardy after the death of her first husband, Solomon Scribner.
These documents also establish that Paul^4 did indeed migrate with his family
to Canada and lived there for a short time before his death abt
1798. His wife, Hendrickye lived until about 1825 and
was cared for in her declining years by her [youngest] son, Cornelius.
Cornelius and his wife, Anne, are listed in one affidavit as having 10
children. two of whom are quite feeble and sickly.
John^6 Van Wicklin, Junior [son of John^5 and grandson of Paul^4] gives
testimonial support for his uncle, Cornelius in one of the documents. These
documents can be found in the source section of Cornelius Van Wicklin's family page. [Information
sent to me via 15 Aug 07 email from Joyce Carr.]
