The Three Gruff Brothers
and the Dragon

David Jan.15, 1997
Project 2 Mrs. Mullen
(Age 7)

Drawing #1    Once there were three brothers named "Billy Gruff." They were Big Billy Gruff, Bigger Billy Gruff, and Biggest Billy Gruff. They lived in the country thirty miles from the ocean. In the country it was very hot in the summer. The brothers wanted to go to the ocean where there were gentle breezes and cool, refreshing water.

There was one problem. To get to the ocean where there were gentle breezes and cool, refreshing water you had to cross a bridge over rushing waters. Under the bridge lived a mean, ugly Dragon. The mean, ugly Dragon took money and lunch from anyone who crossed the bridge.

Drawing #2    First to cross the bridge was Big Billy Gruff in his jam-packed Volkswagon with his fishing pole sticking out the side window.

    "VROOM! VROOM!" sounded the vehicle.

"WHO'S ThAT VROOMING OVER MY BRIDGE?" roared the Dragon.

"It is I, Big Billy Gruff. I'm going to the ocean where there are gentle breezes and cool, refreshing water."

"No you're not," said the Dragon, "without giving me your money and your lunch first!"

"Oh please don't take my money or my lunch. I have very little of either. Wait for my brother Bigger Billy Gruff. He has more money and more lunch.

"OK. Off with you then," said the Dragon.

Drawing #3    A little while later Bigger Billy Gruff came along in his jam-packed GMC Jimmy 4x4 with his beach umbrella sticking out the back window.

"VROOM! VROOM! VROOM! VROOM!" sounded the vehicle.

"WHO'S THAT VROOMING OVER MY BRIDGE?" roared the Dragon.

"It is I, Bigger Billy Gruff. I'm going to the ocean where there are gentle breezes and cool, refreshing water."

"No, you're not," said the Dragon, "without giving me your money and your lunch first!"

"Oh, please don't take my money or my lunch. I have very little of either. Wait for my brother Biggest Billy Gruff to come along. He has more money and more lunch."

"Very well. Be off with you," said the Dragon.

Drawing #4
Soon along came Biggest Billy Gruff in his jam-packed GMC Suburban with his surfboard sticking out the back window.

"VROOM! VROOM! VROOM! VROOM! VROOM! VROOM!" sounded the vehicle.

"WHO'S THAT VROOM-VROOMING OVER MY BRIDGE?" roared the Dragon.

"IT IS I, BIGGEST BILLY GRUFF," the brother roared back at the Dragon.

"Give me your money and your lunch!" roared the Dragon.

"Come and get them," said Biggest Billy Gruff.

Up jumped the mean, ugly Dragon. He landed right on Biggest Billy Gruff's surfboard that was sticking out the back window. The Dragon bounced off the surfboard and over the bridge into the rushing water.

Biggest Billy Gruff went along to join his brothers at the ocean where there were gentle breezes and cool, refreshing water.

At the ocean the Gruff Brothers were so cool and refreshed that they wanted to stay forever. They probably did.

So snip, snap, snout,
This tale's told out.
