Composition
Masterclass studies with Jacob Druckman, Lukas Foss, Gunther Schuller. Open the Door premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic, 2000. Guest speaker and composer, Hertford College of Oxford University, 1999. Symphony #1 premiered by the Buffalo Philharmonic, 1996. Violin Concerto premiered by the Houghton Philharmonia, 1996. Premieres by the Peabody Wind Ensemble, 1993, 1995. Original works performed by the Janus Orchestra, the Peabody Camerata, the Bach Ensemble of Baltimore and the Southern Illinois University-Carbondale Chamber Orchestra. Other works performed at ResMusicAmerica of Baltimore, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Music for choir and organ published by Zimbel Press. Film scoring studies, Eastman School of Music (1983, 1984) and New York University (2001). Founded the Christian Fellowship of Art Music Composers, 1994, which has held annual national conferences since 1995, and whose Honorary Members include James McMillan, George Tsontakis, and Charles Wuorinen. Served as music theory and composition faculty at the CPAF MasterWorks Festival 1998-99.
Conducting
Music Director, Houghton Philharmonia Orchestra, 1995 - present. Guest conductor, Rochester Philharmonic (2002, 2000), Liberty Symphony (2000), NYSSMA Area All-State Orchestra (1999), Genesee Symphony (1997). Workshop and masterclass studies with David Zinman, Donald Thulean, Gerhard Samuel, Daniel Lewis, Harold Farberman, Jorge Mester. Active participant in American Symphony Orchestra League/New York Philharmonic Conductors Symposium with Erich Leinsdorf, 1987. Served as assistant and/or guest conductor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory Orchestras (1987-88), Ithaca College Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Choirs in New York (1985-87), and The Liberty Symphony Orchestra and William Jewell Symphonic Winds in Missouri (1983-85). Other guest conducting: Cornell University Savoyards, Ithaca's First Street Playhouse, William Jewell Opera Theatre, Missouri West-Central Conference Band Festivals, City of Liberty Summer Band. Regular guest conductor of Houghton College major ensembles.
Scholarship
Edited "Concerto in D" for violin and orchestra (1786) by the Chevalier de Meude-monpas for American premiere (first performance since 1786) by the Chicago Civic Orchestra in 1992; published by Theodore Presser, 1996.
Computer Literacy
Background in MIDI applications and digital synthesis, including staff work at the Peabody Conservatory Electronic and Computer Music studios. Designed the Houghton College Computer Music and Multimedia Studio, which includes digital video, digital audio, and MIDI production facilities. Fifteen years experience in desktop music publishing using Score and Finale software for PC and Windows. Wrote PC and Windows ear training and figured bass software as well as other computer-assisted musicianship programs for use at the Institute of Notre Dame and Houghton College.
Performance Skills
Undergraduate minors in piano and voice (tenor). Undergraduate experience as orchestral hornist.
Church Music
Music director for churches in Missouri and Maryland, 1981-1993. Duties included keyboard performance, adult and youth choral conducting and supervision of paid and volunteer personnel, as well as collaborative worship planning. Guest conductor, Houghton Wesleyan Church choir, 1996-97, 2001-2002.
