Introduction to Leisure Service Delivery Systems

Course Purpose:

To systematically introduce the student to both public and private agencies which deliver leisure services and opportunities. To investigate how these agencies plan and mange their programs and resources from a client oriented perspective. To provide a broad scope of leisure services and integrate their roles relative to the overall curriculum in the recreation and leisure studies major.

Desired Learning Outcomes:

  1. Develop an understanding of the recreation movement from both a domestic and global perspective
  2. Understand the diversity of agencies which provide leisure opportunities and explore their role in society: outdoor, therapeutic, commercial, industrial, travel and tourism, community, equestrian, church, adventure sports, and outdoor education.
  3. Acquire a basic understanding of the respective mission statements of each of these agencies.
  4. Appreciate some of the current issues in the leisure services
  5. To think creatively and critically about the methods, problems, and issues of today
  6. Understand the role and function of local, state, and federal government agencies (agriculture, interior,BLM,)
  7. Understand the role and function of the private sector
  8. Understand the role and functions of delivering leisure services to special populations (developmental disabilities, mental illness,
  9. Understand the issues in professional preparation

  1. Introduction and overview of the public, private and commercial agencies
  2. Look at the parks and recreation movement from a historical perspective
  3. Overview of the recreation profession (accreditation, certification, registration and liscensing)
  4. Outdoor Recreation:
    1. Public outdoor recreation agencies
    2. Outdoor and environmental education
    3. Adventure sports
    4. Ecotourism
    5. Travel and tourism

There is no required textbook for this class. All of the reading assignments will be either on reserve at the library or you will be directed to interactive Websites on the Internet.

Evaluation

3 exams (25 points each) = 75 %

Debate = 5 %

Small writing assignments = 15 %

Participation = 5 %
